Ready to Make History

Ready To Make History
I would like to begin by congratulating the Sun-Times and the Tribune for their successful coronation of Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley as the Democratic nominee for Congress in Illinois’s 5th District.

By endorsing Commissioner Quigley whilst virtually ignoring the race as a whole, providing less than ample coverage of the candidates and their campaigns, the two major dailies essentially ensured that their man would finish first amidst the low voter turnout and un-recognizable names on the ballot.

Then, the mainstream press tells the voters that the April 7th General Election is a mere detail in this Democratic stronghold: Mr. Quigley is the presumptive victor.

I wonder, “What if Chicagoans are increasingly disgruntled with the corruption and malfeasance in the Democratic Party of Chicago?”

“What if it isn’t enough that Quigley is a purported reformer? What if voters are ready to defeat the machine, rather than reform the machine?”

“What if voters want an end to these expensive wars of aggression in the Middle East, as opposed to re-focusing on Afghanistan?”

“What if voters don’t believe that our attacks on innocent civilians in Afghanistan amount to a “good war?”’

“What if voters are ready for bold, fresh ideas to tackle our economic malaise, such as abolishing the federal reserve and ridding our monetary system of its tendency to operate on the creation of artificial economic bubbles?”

“What if the tax-payers of Illinois’s 5th district are ready to be spared the immense expense of supporting a foreign empire?”

“What if Chicagoans are disgusted by these banker bailouts: handing trillions of dollars out to a criminal banker class that has shown almost no willingness to operate by the rules, and to treat their compatriots with any sense of respect and decency?”

“What if we really need a bailout of the people, wherein we invest in creating good Green jobs: putting people to work re-invigorating our public transportation and building alternative energy plants throughout the country?”

“What if we can pay for our Green Works Projects by halving the Pentagon Budget over five years, instead of running this country deeper into debt?”

“What if I can attract fiscally prudent conservatives and ecologically-minded progressives, get them out to canvass for me, phone bank for me, decorate the district with Green yard signs, and, most importantly, vote for me on Election Day?”

Then, we will make history on April 7th by electing America’s first Green Party Congressman.
Green Candidate for Illinois 5th District!

Refuse Corporate Donations: A Plea To The Other Candidates in Illinois's 5th District

by Matt Reichel

Something must be done to cleanse the American political system and instill some degree of integrity in the nation’s democratic institutions.

As fraudsters and hustlers from Bernard Madoff to Rod Blagojevich fall like dominoes, in the footsteps of Bernie Ebbers, Kenneth Lay and Dan Rostenkowski, one can say that confidence in the good old American way is beginning to wane. While apathy towards politics has been a mainstay of the American consciousness for decades, the overall sense of despair in the air is probably at record highs.

Those who believed in the American political system framed this a fall of hope, but unfortunately winter arrived early and relentlessly. In Chicago, multiple snow and ice storms coupled with vicious winds brought the mid-western metropolis its most unbearable December in recent memory. When winter officially began on Sunday, wind chills dipped as low as –30 F: that brand of cold that is determined to slice through all defenses you throw at it. Meanwhile, the Blago circus came to town: the over-charismatic executive, teetering through the worst approval rating in Illinois gubernatorial history, failed to heed warnings of when enough was enough.

Reports indicate that he thought $1.5 million was a just price for Obama’s senate seat: a relative bargain in these days of neo-liberal hegemony. One could hardly get elected to the U.S. House with that kind of cash. In fact, the seat that used to be Blago’s, currently occupied by incoming Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, could very well cost around $1.5 million for the Chicago machinist most intent on calling it theirs. Emanuel himself spent $1.88 million getting re-elected this last time around, despite the lack of any viable opposition in either round.

In the coming special election, still yet to be officially announced because Emanuel hasn’t resigned, the total number of announced candidates is 18 and climbing. Every interested state rep, senator and alderman in the Chicago area has begun flexing their muscle, organizing their political apparatus, and using corporate press clout to promote their candidacies. The talk around town is not where the candidates stand on the issues, or where they lie along the political spectrum, but rather who’s got the goods to win the race.

And last I checked it isn’t only in Chicago where political livelihood is entirely dependent on support from corporate crooks. Despite all of the euphoria of early November, Obama is a prime representation of the fact that one can never win the White House by challenging the reprehensible actions of the nation’s largest banks, investors and lenders. Instead you have to allow them to donate generously to your campaign and then to dictate your economic policies.

While Obama was giving his spiel about hope and change repeatedly for two years, he was concurrently amassing an unprecedented war chest, thrust along by at least $2 million from entities directly involved in the sub-prime swindle: Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, UBS and Lehman Brothers. Despite Obama framing his candidacy as the one closer to the interests of the people, his rake from all of the above was considerably greater than McCain’s.

Corporate America realized early that Obama was the likely victor and that they had to move to ensure that he was thoroughly corrupted, and wouldn’t use the economic malaise as an excuse to begin regulating the financial sector. In following Obama’s purse strings, it is clear that he will likely do nothing to protect Americans from crony Capitalism. Citibank, currently under investigation for its involvement in derivative fraud and managing to make $1.2 trillion disappear from its balance sheets, was one of Obama’s biggest donors: with nearly $400,000 being given from its employees to the Senator in the first half of 2008 alone.

At just the time when the country needs to forcibly remove these crooked corporations from the political arena, they are as deeply ingrained as ever. Just when the congress must absolutely restore monetary sanity by re-instituting the Glass-Steagall act and reversing decades of rampant deregulation and privatization, the president will be doing the bidding of the same investment banks that gave us the housing bubble. And just as the American public begins to digest the enormity of said bubble, “our president” will assuredly be another loyal servant of Wall Street.

The foundations will only tremble when Americans pledge to support no candidate who accepts donations of any kind from corporations. When we can be sure that our public servants are clean of the crud of monied interests, we can then begin to have a grand discourse about hope and change.

The place to begin is right in Blago’s backyard, where the governor’s godchildren are busily positioning themselves to be the chosen successor to the seat once held by the man himself. This post won’t be sold, surely enough, but it probably will be bought. Given the district’s history of electing illicit political criminals, there’s no reason to think that the hounds won’t be let loose on the candidates.

Will any of them pledge to refuse corporate donations this time around? Will they rise above the easy route of accepting large sums of money from those interests intent on preying on the poor, de-unionizing workers, and instituting a perpetual culture of indebtedness?

I hereby demand it of them. I demand that each of the candidates sign onto this pledge to refuse all corporate donations. I ask that they run on the issues, and win by talking to constituents about their concerns, desires and wishes. In so doing, I dream that the victor will be “our congressperson” and not another soul-less pawn of big business.

I have thrown my hat into the ring of candidates because I would like to see my dream of a clean political system become reality. I have grown frustrated over years of dwindling social movements and increased state coercion of civil society. The dictatorship of corporate America, which is currently in shambles, must be swept away and replaced by a respectful liberal democracy. The first step is getting the fraudsters and hustlers out of politics, and replacing them with public servants who pledge to represent the interest of the working majority.

Will any of the other candidates in this special election rise to the occasion and work with me towards creating a more just nation?
For the health of our democracy, it is what must be done.

Take Action against the Bush Regime, Oct. 5th!

Oct. 5th is to be a day of nationwide resistance against the Bush regime and their policies of inequity, lies and death. Please consider refusing to work, go to school or be otherwise complacent for this one important day of all of our lives. If this mass demonstration makes an impact, who knows? We may yet see a day when the people have a voice again. Even if you’re a cynic, it couldn’t hurt to take a day off, log off your computer and join your brothers and sisters, in solidarity, on the street.
All Day and Into the Night
The Loop
12 NOON- GRANT PARK (Jackson and Columbus)

4:30PM- FEDERAL PLAZA (Jackson and Dearborn)

INTO THE NIGHT: GRANT PARK (Jackson and Columbus)

DESCRIPTION:

All day and into the night, people will flood downtown Chicago making our determination to drive out this criminal regime known to the world! Nothing about this day will be just your "go through the motions- rally and march" protest-as-usual! Early in the day, students will walk out of school- even shut down whole campuses, people will refuse to go to work and bring their entire families, and converge with thousands in the heart of downtown at GRANT PARK. Here we begin a festival of resistance with fiery indictments of the most dangerous force in history, the Bush regime, from voices of conscience from all walks of life.

Then we will step off together and spread this movement throughout the Loop, our collective voices reverberating off the surrounding buildings and rising up to the sky! Hundreds of thousands of people downtown will be wondering what will happen that day and as our voices fill the air, they will rush to the windows and see that WE ARE WHAT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR; WE ARE TRULY MAKING RESISTANCE IRRESISTIBLE! We'll be spreading the word to many more - distributing literature and materials that will make their way into workplaces, shopping centers, and restaurants; calling on everyone to join us after work as we make known our aim to drive out this regime throughout downtown Chicago including right at the Federal Building!

Many thousands more will join us here and will continue with us as we step off and back to Grant Park where we will continue the festival with musical and theatrical performances, and the biggest and baddest open-mic you've ever seen in your life! And all the way into the night, we'll be strategizing on where to go from here to fulfill our real aim of DRIVING OUT THE BUSH REGIME!

We are looking for an apartment in Chicago, July 1 move-in date. Preferably along the Blue line. $1,000 and allows a dog . We not familiar with some neighborhoods in that area. What can be said about the Humbolt Park, Logan Square, Wicker Park or Bucktown areas? Also we've been told that the Pilsin area is ok. Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

Who Is a Rainbow?

Who Is a Rainbow? (anyone with a belly button:^)

Anyone who wants to be, we come from all walks, of life and adhere to a variety of beliefs. We aspire to be a Loving and Caring people toward one another and all the varied hues of our Mother Earth. To that end. we practise non-violence and peace activism, ecologically sound ways of living and respect for all beings, and ways of life. Some folks come to Rainbow for a chance to feel the Living Spirit, some for the fun of it, some for a chance to see those they Love. Most gather for a mixture of these reasons. We laugh, sing, play musical instru- ments, and share our experiences & dreams in our heartsongs. We strive to better ourselves and explore alternative life-styles, medicine, and ways to solve problems. We experience cooperative living. Sometimes we even seem to work a miracle. There are no leaders. Individuals (known as "Focalizers") try to facilitate the consensus of the, Rainbow Tribes on a local and/or national level. We circle for our meals, and councils because we are all equal. Decisions regarding a local family are made by consensus, wherever the need arises. Like at a regional picnic or council. Decision regarding the Rainbow Family of Living Light can only be made on the land, at the main tribunal council, from July 1-7th each year during the Gathering of the Tribes.

South Side Neighborhoods

I am looking to buy a single family house or condo. I am 31 and sick of renting but have limited funds. I am setting my hopes on an up and coming neighborhood on the cities south side. I don't need the neighborhood to be a little suburbia, but would like to see some hints (at least) that in the next 5-7 years that the neighborhood will be fairly safe and that my property will appreciated in value. Any suggestions? No offense, but not looking for suggestions from people who don't know much about the south side other than what they see and hear in the media or from "friends". The opinion from those that live, have lived or visit the area would be appreciated.

BIBLICAL use of MAGIC-MUSHROOMS.

MANNA AMBROSIA/SOMA/TEONANACATL
Hell-Low from Heaven-High; I am author/publisher of "MANNA" the book documenting the
BIBLICAL use of MAGIC-MUSHROOMS.
“Manna” Explores the evidence that Christ was the leader of a Pagan Cult teaching a revival/renaissance of an ancient mushroom ritual learned in Egypt by Moses and Christ, a mushroom religion known also to the Maya of ancient Mesoamerica, and around the world. The Manna-Book asks if this knowledge was kept secret by an elite caste of priests within the Kabalistic Jewish Rabbis until such a time as Christ came and taught it to the masses.

Exodus 16:14-24 indicates that MANNA was inevitably a MUSHROOM.
It was a small round thing in the morning dew, it bred larva, and would melt to mush if not dried. KING JAMES VERSION.
All mushroom pickers know that fly’s eggs cause larvae/worms in mushrooms. The one food most notorious for being full of worms.

Daniel 5:3-5 with Exodus 16:32 and Hebrews 9:4
indicates that the mushroom was a DRUG. After sacking the temple in Jerusalem and stealing the Ark-of-the-Covenant, the King of Babylon and his table drank from the golden cup containing the holy “MANNA” they had visions within the hour….. Psilocybin takes 30-40 minutes to induce visions.

Hebrews 9:4 makes it clear that MANNA was the most holy thing to Israelites, kept in A POT OF GOLD in the ARK OF THE COVENANT, in the MOST HOLY OF HOLYS. So sacred is the Manna that only the High Priest has access to it and only on one day of the year (Yom Kippur), which comes 3 days before the harvest moon (Hallows Eve).

Psalm 78:24-25 calls MANNA FOOD OF ANGELS, just as MAYAN/INCA PRIESTS from Meso-America called it TEONANACATL FOOD OF THE GODS.
MANNA is an Egyptian word, not Hebrew or Aramaic, meaning;
The BREAD OF GOD. This is what Moses called it in Exodus 16:15.
“Bread Of God” means “FOOD OF GOD”, which is the same meaning of TEONANACATL (Mayan), and AMBROSIA (Greek), and SOMA (Hindu) a word for mushroom tea, all these words mean “Spiritual Food”.
Coca and Tobacco Leaves found in Pharaohs tombs suggest it was ancestors of Mayan/Inca Priests who brought MUSHROOMS to Egypt.

John 2:6-9 indicates that Jesus made water into wine by boiling mushrooms (Mushroom-Tea), the waterpots were made of stone, not clay, (stone pots were used for cooking, clay pots used for storing water). These pots already contained 2-3 firkins of a substance before the pots were filled with water.
A “Firkin” is an Old-English measurement meaning a fourth part. Half to three-quarters of fresh mushrooms with water makes a potent tea. Tea is the safest way to consume field mushrooms, killing dangerous bacteria like E. Coli. In the Atharva Veda, the Hindus called this Tea SOMA. Greeks called mushroom jelly AMBROSIA.
Those who drank the water made into wine said it was the most potent intoxicant (St. John 2:10). The Bible tells us that Jesus making water into wine was the “beginning of miracles” … in other words no one saw any miracles until drinking the wine made from water. (St. John 2:11).

“MANA” is an EGYPTIAN WORD, not HEBREW or ARAMAIC, Meaning; “The BREAD OF GOD”. Moses, Christ, and Joseph, The favorite son of Israel, were all educated in Egypt. Solomon married Pharaoh’s daughter, and Abraham found his God at a place called SHECHEM (Sekhem), which is another Egyptian word for MANNA. TEONANACATL [Maya] = SOMA [Hindu] = AMBROSIA / BROMA-THEON [Greek] = MANNA [Egyptian/Hindu] It can be no coincidence that the MAYAN, EGYPTIAN, GREEK, HINDU, and ISRAELITE words for the mushroom all mean exactly the same thing: “THE BREAD OF GOD”.

MANNA was round, was found on the ground in the dew, would melt to mush if not dried or collected on time, and would breed larvae. All unique characteristics of mushrooms. When dried it was like “WAFERS OF BREAD” and it’s color was like “CORIANDER SEED”, the consistency and color of dried mushrooms, as described in Exodus Ch. 16.
Other psychedelics used in the Bible include, of course, Cannabis, Mandrake and others. This book focuses on Mushrooms: “The Global Sacrament”.
Be advised that the author does not advocate the non-ritual use of mushrooms or in any way place their importance above that of love, “Seek first the kingdom of love and all other things shall be added to you” [Christ].

We want to buy the worst place in an up and coming neighborhood for a major rennovation job.

Whether it be N or S-side, which neighborhoods are you starting to see the very beginnings of gentrification? Looking for something adjascent to more happening clubbing neighborhoods too.

Is there a art/warehouse district of any kind similar to what you might find in Oakland?
anyone live in Pilsen?

Hey: I lived in Pilsen 15 years ago, in a Podmajersky loft that was quite affordable. My wife and I are moving back to Chicago - can't wait - and wondering about neighborhoods. We're moderately poor creative types so Pilsen still sounds attractive. Anyone live there now? How is the neighborhood/real estate?

$100--moving to Chicago--need a place to crash for a few days

Hi there! I'm a comedian and writer moving to Chicago this week--scheduled to arrive Sunday the 19th (although I'm taking Amtrak, so who knows)...
I don't have a ton of money, but if someone would like to make $100 for a week of letting me crash (couch, floor, whatever), I would be most appreciative. I am clean, respectful, will be out most of the time job-hunting, and I don't have a lot of stuff. I can give you personal references if you would like.
Since I'll be travelling until Sunday night, the best way to reach me would be my cell at 503-969-7632. Thanks!

Hello All,

We moved to Chicago from Orlando about 3 weeks ago. Prior to that we lived in London, UK. I am loving it here already, despite the weather (it's snowing tonight!). But I don't know much about decent neighbourhoods, about good places to shop, or interesting things to do. Is there any advice you have for newcomers like us?

Many thanks!

Okay tribe slackers, now is the time to type. Tell me where i should move to in chitown. Craigslist people are morons and i don't know why they bother. I've got a san francisco budget which means i think i can move into expensive places like lincoln park but i'm not sure if i could take the sterility. i need other late-20s single people to hang out with, preferably the freaky whisky drinking musician types, but not the trendoid scenester dropouts, i'm talking about people who go to burningman but when they come home they act just the same....

it's called "What the Hell Is Up With That?" It's actually a completely anonymous place to write about whatever is bothering you or pissing you off.. And people can reply to your post. And I post one each day, too. It's actually a pretty interesting experiment, being completely anonymous and all.. makes for some interesting conversations :)

Hello there! Just joined the tribe, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has the time to ask their friends what sort of uncommon jobs they have heard of going on about Chicago. I'm not interested in anything sexual-even though I'm Betty Boop, I still have my standards! Just looking for something that maybe isn't posted in the classifieds- I've worked most recently as a private tutor for an Arabian Princess in Switzerland, and following that I had a short-term contract with a billionaire in Florida, helping manage his fortune/ventures. I've recently returned to the midwest to be near to my family (family member is ill) and I'm having difficulty finding a job to suit me since I'm only coming across these sort of telemarketing and sales positions which I've interviewed for and apparently am unqualified for. If you're feeling kind today, please do ask around- I love working with people or working alone, and I'd be interested in doing anything from being a nanny to working in a record store to being a private chef... basically whatever anyone is looking for, I'm sure I could help out. Unless of course, it has to do with selling people shit that they don't need following pyramid schematics. Thank you so much! Peace, and I hope to hear from you soon!

I live in OH, and am planning a trip to Chicago in a few weeks. Can anyone recommend a place outside of the city itself to stay in, a place that is easy to drive to and get out of, medium price range, with easy access to subway into the city?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I just moved to Chi-town again, and I need people to get together with and just have a good time. Maybe make some friends that will last for good times and bad. Im ready to meet some new people that are into art and music. Basicly I think it should be a co-ed event as we can watch eachothers back that way. Love to talk to you all soon. Love Farrah

hey there,

The boyfriend and I are moving to Chicago in a few months. What's your take on best neighborhoods (i.e. ones that have lots of life, good restaraunts, stuff to do, all the necessities in walking distance, decent apartments for not too much $). I know we want to live northside, but that's pretty broad. also, I'm pretty familiar with the big tourist attractions and such (lived in Hyde Park for a couple months), but are there any small, lesser-known gems? Local insights would be most valuable.

ciao,
Jessica
