Re: Did you live in E. Rogers Park in the 70s?
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 1:52 AMOh yeah. I remember CIndy Sue's. I lived right behind there, sorta, on W. Loyola across the street from the shoe repair shop. My exwife even worked there for a bit. This is late 1970's. I remember MiPi which had those "NY Style" thick crust pizzas. I did not like them. Does anyone remember Beefsteak Inn??!!!! Whoa, that was fun. Remember Zanadu's. How 'bout Bottom's Up that was in the basement of that corner bldg on Sheridan & Devon? SW corner. How 'bout Parthenon's Cave which was a couple doors north of Granada which some jackass tore down? Bastards. What was that bar's name on that same strip as the Granada but the last door as you head towards Loyola E? Forgot that momentarily.
And sure 'nuff, I remember Unameit. How long did Gail Colby bartend there. She wasn't all that pretty, but I liked her. She didn't like me even though I was goodlooking because I was a bad lover. (I was. I'd since graduated.) Let's see, what else? Remember that Blues bar on Sheridan and Rogers Park way there towards Howard? Remember Yatzi's bar somewhere down Bdwy near Foster or something? Can't remember. I was friends with the owner's nephew Alex Velos. Any fucking Beefsteak Inn people there!!!!!!! Knew them all, Paul, Ann Reardon, Mark, Mark Duffy, Dugan, Deb, Mer, Michelle, Papas, Peter fr Boston, Frank, Marcia, Mary, Elaine, Marge, Martha, Nate the gay cook, Ross, Val the pretty bartender, Val the friendly Russian, Stu the DJ, Gary the singer, Jim, Ursula, well, that's it for now. Let's get drunk, man. No, just kidding. I don't drink no more. Haha. No, really. I don't. I could have a green tea with you though. Haha. How 'bout Fin & Claw over on Western. After getting all drunk, we'd eat at IHOP over at Western & Howard. Oh, almost forgot. I also remember the other bartender at Unameit. He was half-PuertoRican/half-German. Forgot his first name. Nice guy. And Unameit's owner usually drank at Cuneen's, and ignored his own place till after 2AM which is when Cuneen's shut down. But Unameit was open till 4. Yeah. This was all in the late 1970's Not that I'm gay, nor do I care, but does anybody know whatever happened to that good looking guy named Paul Hoffmann who worked at the Beefsteak Inn over on Morse & Sheridan? He drove around in that big giant Delta 88 that had ends all over, even on the roof.
